To paraphrase Ed Ruscha I wanted to make pictures, but I didn't want to paint. It's not so much a subject I'm drawn to, but an array, a description of a surface. There is a thing there, but what about the space. My dad, an art educator often did the same thing in his paintings. There you have it.
